Sim City

SimDubai

Urbanity

Being a huge fan of Sim City and urbanity, I also love to see some of the more impressive accomplishments of landscape architecture that can be seen with Google Earth.

Take as example the Sim City-like precision and planning oversight that is being demonstrated in the United Arab Emirates where Dubai is booming.

Huge highways and large traffic corridors are being built the in the desert, nicely ahead of the actual occupancy:

And sometimes Dubai looks exactly like a Sim City screenshot:

Quite amazing. This satellite view almost makes me want to play Sim City right away.

Sim City Freemason street layout

Urbanity

Washington DC's street layout could be more than an oasis of landmarks, museums and parks for tourists: it is allegedly an occult centre of devil worship. Many followers of conspiracy theories claim that the WWashington D.C. street layout is Satanic and Masonic, full of goathead pentagrams. And amidst all this, the Freemasons rule the world.

But for this Sim City post the validity of those claims matter not. I will also not answer whether worship of Lucifer might not be so bad considering Bible text show God is a jerk himself. I don't care whether my Sims are Satanic or not, I care about urbanetics and ambitious city building plans.

Therefore I wonder whether it would be possible to create a goathead in Sim City. Two limitations: the 45-degree building limits (72-degree angles are required for a true pentagram) and the lack of majestic boulevards in Sim City 3000 - this would be much more fun in Sim City 4 which alas I do not have installed.

Nonetheless I managed to create a city pattern that seems to create a goathead surrounded by major transportation routes. This layout would best work on a large map using my 14x14 street grid pattern:

I have yet to actually build this, but I'm interested to find out some day how this would look. I have always liked the idea of building cities with majestic downtowns and always try to build my cities in such a way that landmarks, boulevards and parks complement the CBD in such a way that each city has a unique look and feel. Making a city that resembles Washington DC in such a way that paranoid Sims turn to the occult for an explanation definitely sounds like fun!
