Billy Corgan at Paradiso
- Posted by Rob (#1) on June 10, 2005 08:56 CEST
Last night Billy Corgan rocked Paradiso, Amsterdam. And it was a lot of fun!
True, Billy solo is not The Smashing Pumpkins. Never has been and never will be, end of the debate. But it's Billy Corgan alright: complete with alternative guitar solos and a trademark creepy voice. Oh, yeah - and a fabulous stage setup this tour. What looked like a set of bathroom tiles turned out to be an old-fashioned disco wall in all sorts of colours. True video images were not possible at an estimated resolution of 100x40 pixels but it was still fun to see Billy and his band perform in front of what is best described as a bunch of Winamp/Noatun visualisations.
Supporting act were Gliss. Never heard of them before, but I walked out with a shirt and CD. And I might see Billy Corgan again at the Forum next week just so I can see Gliss again. They're very, very nice. Sort of a spacy, modern The Cure. Or something. Check them out!
(To avoid repetition all references to sex, drugs and alcohol have been removed from this entry. Just be glad I kept the rock and roll in!)

Garbage at Paradiso
- Posted by Rob (#1) on June 3, 2005 08:40 CEST
Did a bit of drinking, dancing and smoking in celebration of Garbage performing at Paradiso, Amsterdam for their "Bleed like me" 2005 world tour.
And I'm not sure what to say. The musical performance was top-notch, as was the sound. Heavy beats joined with upbeat rhythm delivered a very swinging set.
However, the show itself was a bit bland and I had expected more, despite the very old audience (at 27, I was young). Shirley Manson - 38 already, can you believe it?! - wasn't really swinging at all. In fact, I suspect I wasn't the only one who was stoned last night. The other band members hardly ever moved at all, except for some courtesy walks to each other.
Again, the music was great. But the energy was missing. I couldn't help but thinking: this is not 2005. And, "thank God, I'm still a lot younger than these folks". Had a good night out and enjoyed the show, but the reason was nostalgia. Not hip, young, wicked randomness.
