Million dollar camper

Mate Pimmez will tour Europe in a camper and needs dinero. Fortunately you can help out, by going to Million Dollar Camper dotcom. Just claim a piece of camper for yourself by renting sticker space. And know that part of the proceedings will go to the Warchild effort!

He's leaving tomorrow, so if you happen to see a camper on the Autobahn with HorrorPops stickers at the rear end: think of me, and greet the driver and passengers while honking your claxon to the tune of Where They Wander. Safe trip, lads!

Back on-line soon

I'm not just talking about my personal health, oh no: after fifteen months of absense I will have an Internet connection at home again. The downside is that I might become addicted to night-time MSN sessions once again, but considering my daily commute and active social life that's not too likely so it's worth the risk. The bigger downside is that my new static IP address (rumoured to become 86.87.82.37) will make it very, very tempting to start hosting things at home again just while I was trying to lower my electricity bills.

I'll try and think of any positive notes as well. One that I can already think of will be the ability to update the HorrorPops web site more promptly and to put the Arch archives for my software (such as Atlantik) back on-line, which will tempt me to resume development.

Oh, about that personal health.. almost completely stopped couching. Without visiting any doctors, so my no-claim health care refund remains intact!

Pandora's Box

Like Last.FM, Pandora is an on-line radio station aimed at providing music similar to what users already like. It is however not entirely flawless:

/img/journal/20060327-pandora.png

To start things off, here's a track that's musically similar to HorrorPops called "Ghouls" by Horrorpops, that features rockabilly revival style, basic rock song structures, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation and repetitive melodic phrasing.

(Why we're not playing Horrorpops)

We're not playing HorrorPops, only similar music.. for example, Horrorpops! Methinks the developers of Pandora need a small lesson on case-sensitivity. (And please, no mean remarks about my auto-linking engine which is case-sensitive as well: that's intentional.)

Cheap HorrorPops merchandise

If you're living in Europe and are outraged about Machete's insane shipping costs ($42 p&p for a hoodie? hell no!), fear no more: Interpunk.com sells plenty of HorrorPops merchandise (CDs as well) at reasonable prices while not overcharging you just to get your goods delivered.

Exhausted gig tour summary

It's hard to believe, but my gig-fest has almost come to an end! Time flies when you're having fun. Tomorrow there's the final HorrorPops/Left Alone show, in Amsterdam. And then.. it's dull, boring Christmas time (read: time to rest).

A quick summary of last week's tour: Glasgow was wicked. I really liked the Cathouse as a venue and I almost pulled a girl in the hostel. But I wasn't drunk enough to lower my standards that far. Silly me.

Liverpool was wicked also. Thanks for letting me crash, Chris. Hope next time you're not so tired as I could've stayed at Road Kill a bit longer, that was a good after-party venue. Enjoyed the pizza.

London was, well, London. The HorrorPops played a most brilliant gig, but walking through the city wasn't as exciting as it used to be. Sure, I bought new socks at Camden and new (discounted) Converse. But I can't help but thinking I would've enjoyed it better had Isy not been ill, Steph not been stuck in (burning) Hemel, Rachel not been grounded, and so on.

To make matters even worse, Portsmouth sucked. It's run-down and the last train back to London was a 10.24pm, so I had to get a B&B for the night and then rush back to London in the morning to be able to make the check-out time for my hotel room. Loads of stress and expenses I could have done without.

On top of that, I came down with a cold or flu or whatever it was that caused me to feel shit for the past few days. Even had to skip the Heideroosjes gig last night. Meh. Bit of an anti-climax. Let's turn that around in Amsterdam!

Where did I leave my... oops.

Billy Idol was a tad boring last night and to be honest, Amsterdam wasn't all that great either. Got home a quarter to four, snoozed for a bit, packed, went to the train station to go back to Amsterdam.. and realised I had forgotten my BritRail pass. Oops. No use in travelling the UK without it.

Knowing there would be no fucking way to catch my flight to Manchester anymore, I relaxed, went home and showered. Any flight to Manchester today would now cost me over €300 so that's one gig I'll be missing. I refuse to not make Glasgow though, so I just booked a €100 flight for tomorrow morning, Rotterdam to London, from where I'll take the train to Scotland. (Note: bring BritRail pass, Robert!)

Damn. Due to the cancelled Northampton gig and my own personal Manchester fuckup, I'm only going to see 9 HorrorPops gigs this year!

Someone keep me out of the pub tonight.

Back from Scandinavia

Scandinavia rules. Sure, a pint of beer costs 51 NOK (€6.50/£4.45/$7.65) and a pack of 20 fags sets one back 90 NOK (€11.45/£7.85/$13.50), but Scandinavia rules. The air is fresh. The gals are lovely, loose and bendy. The blokes are morons, but that only makes me look better in front of girls. Yup, I quite like it up north.

Flew into Copenhagen Thursday morning, called Kirsten to wish her mom a happy birthday, got a new tattoo at Baby Lou's, went to Malmö for the HorrorPops tour opening and even got a few hours of sleep between 5 and 8. On Friday I flew to Oslo, walked around with Left Alone and danced a bit more during their performance and of course during the HorrorPops' performance as well. I got the impression that I could've pulled but with a 7am flight it didn't seem like a good idea. In case the blonde girl chatting me up ever reads this: du har pene øyne and I'm truly sorry.

As said, took a flight back to Amsterdam early Saturday morning. Back to work for a couple of weeks now.. and I'll see everyone again in The Hague on the 6th!

I am still a geek

A fair share of my life revolves around gigs, offensive hoodies and haircuts, travelling and being nice to (and making out with) pretty girls. Developing SMS games for television and being HorrorPops webmaster do not hurt my social status either. But I am also active in the free software community, so there is no point in denying that despite all the hip properties I am still a geek.

On that note, let me announce that I have started to rebuild project pages for my software, starting with Atlantik, the board game application for KDE. I am still a bit cautious about the new technologies I want to use so I am not actively developing it at the moment, but something tells me I most definitely will do so again in the not too distant future!

The Year of Rob

You know, life year in year out isn't really all that different.

  • January: I throw things at people for wishing me a happy new year when they are just being polite.
  • February: I feel screwed for paying more rent per day than usual. My employer understands though and does the same. I shrug off the December and January hatred once Valentines is out of the way, regardless of having any luck on Valentines or not.
  • March: Anglosphere friends get drunk at St. Patrick's and so do I at the Irish pub.
  • April: Nothing interesting ever happens in April. I broke that spell with four HorrorPops gigs this year though, including my first trip to Copenhagen. Temperatures rise and life is good again.
  • May: PSV or Ajax win the Dutch soccer championship. Once in a decade it's Feyenoord.
  • June: On the 17th, I miss Katy.
  • July: On the 23rd I turn 17 again and again. Except for one or two years when I was broke, I do this in a foreign country. First because of holidays with parents, later out of habit.
  • August: KDE developers get together and code, while the eV board doesn't use the dedicated conference time to finish minutes of the members meeting. I bitch at this in various forms without actually just suggesting they use the conference time for such tasks.
  • September: Temperatures drop and I want to move to California.
  • October: I have my spring cleaning to prepare for a Halloween party. World Series!
  • November: Big utilities bill. My divorced parents start nagging me about visiting for Christmas and the one who doesn't win assumes that means they get me for New Year's Eve. I disown them for that just in case I go first.
  • December: Girls I like get boyfriends or in case I am theirs, they dump me.
