Letter meme
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 07:57 CEST
This is a meme I saw at Inge's LJ some time ago. How it works:
Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and than pass out letters to those who want to play along.
Inge threw an E at me. Quite a tough letter, so it took me a while. Here we go:
- Eindhoven. I studied there and the city hosts my favourite football team PSV Eindhoven. And let's not forget Eindhoven is close to Veldhoven, where Inge lives!
- Epitaph. Home to The Offspring, Heideroosjes and HorrorPops, to name but a few of my favourite bands on this wonderful label.
- England. Sort of my second home, or at least London definitely feels like it.
- English. Not quite the same as England, but I like the Anglosphere and feel quite comfortable communicating in English. (Six more words, damnit!)
- Ezri Dax. I have a geeky side (I am engineer after all) and openly fancy Ezri Dax, fictional character from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one of my favourite television shows.
- Eveline. My sister. :-) Note to Inge: no, I'm not referring to Eef as my sister-in-law.. Feline's my step. Soz.
- Engineering. Hey, engineering. Glad I mentioned being an engineer earlier, I'm seriously running out of steam here. Well, my job description says software engineer. So engineering seems to be be meaningful to me!
- European Union. I'm not always too happy with the bureaucratic bunch in Brussels, but I am considered a citizen of it.
- Eliza Dushku. Hot women never bore me, so I suppose I'd better mention a celebrity whose name begins with an E.. and I think that out of those Eliza is the hottest and not just because you can play some Tetris with her, but because Faith was cool.
- Emmaus College. First high school I attended (we moved so I had the pleasure of experiencing two different ones).
I made it! Thanks Ig, but next time please throw me a freaking Q or Z because I'd probably be finished sooner.. this took me how many weeks? Too many.
As the meme said, drop a comment if you want to play along and I'll assign you a very nice letter. Most likely the ß, ø or š for anyone who's going to be mean about the fact that I used to be a Trekkie. ;-)

Chirac's pride
- Posted by Rob (#1) on June 1, 2006 00:43 CEST
Read on Wikipedia's Euro-English article:
English is frequently used by Europeans to communicate even when neither of them know English as the first language. (For example, a French person who doesn't know German and a German who doesn't know French, but both of whom know English, would use English to communicate with one another, even though it is not the native language of either - such as at the first meeting of Jacques Chirac and Angela Merkel at the Elysée palace after Merkel's confirmation as chancellor).
I wish there was a quotation for that, but nonetheless I find it rather amusing to see Chirac as the example of English being pretty much the lingua franca of Europe.

Fag tender

I love the English language. It's quite efficient and I've just learned to appreciate the term 'age coin' after hearing the Dutch "sigarettenmuntje". Such a shame I stopped smoking two weeks ago. (Except for joints. Still Dutch and I do work in Amsterdam of all places!)
